Itap Bemis, a flexible packaging company controlled by the Brazilian Dixie Toga, one of the largest packaging producers in Latin America, has acquired the flexible product business from the North-American Alcoa Alumínio, a subsidiary of Alcoa. The plant produces aluminum and paper packaging for the food and tobacco industries.
The sum involved in the deal was not revealed. The plant has capacity to convert 12 thousand metric tons of aluminum in foils used in the production of packaging. The decision was part of a global strategy of Alcoa, announced in January 2003, to align its portfolio of products worldwide, which includes disinvesting in assets considered nonessential.
In June 2003, the Australian Amcor, the world largest manufacturer of PET packaging, purchased the PET preform and bottle business of Alcoa Alumínio in Latin America for US$ 75 million.
The plant employs 200 people in Brazil, which, according to a notice from Dixie Toga, will be incorporated by Itap Bemis. Founded in June 1995 from the merger of Dixie Lalekla and Toga, Dixie Toga has ten plants in Brazil and Argentina, and manufactures packaging for margarines, yogurts, water, sweets, etc. |
